A digital signal standard for data transfer between pro audio digital devices, jointly developed by the Audio Engineering Society and the European Broadcasting Union. It primarily supports stereo PCM encoded audio, in DAT at 48kHz, or CD at 44.1. The signal carries two channels of PCM audio over balanced XLR, unbalanced RCA, and optical fibre lines F05/Toslink. Required connections are usually 3-pin XLR and 110-ohm cabling. The protocol can be embedded with SMPTA timecode timestamp data within the digital audio signal.
The non-pro audio varient is called S/PDIF.
